Hey Im looking at changing my host. I've found a better hosting provider that charge 1/3 of the price Im paying right now. How would this be done? Is it a hard process or is it relatively simple?
Shouldn't be too much of a problem really, and if your new host is any good they ought to be able to arrange the transfer for you for minimal or zero cost.
They seem to be almose too good to be true TBH...but Ive scoured through their website and cannot find any small print or anything. Well Ill look into it, may contact them and ask them Thanks for your reply!
I am not sure what size site you have or how long your site has been up and running, but check urljet. they will actually do all the work for you, it is a very smooth transition and you loose nothing in the process. It too, doesn't cost anything to have them move your site to their server.
I've been through soooo many hosts over the past 7 years it's not even funny. Changing them is really just a cakewalk. Here's the nuts and bolts of what you have to do, assuming of course you've got access to your server and nameservers. Start off by making a backup of your website through your control panel. If you're using cpanel, just go about it that way. Download the backup, then upload it to the new server. Before you change your nameservers, but once the backup is uploaded, go to the server that is the new one, edit the configuration and point mysql to the OLD server (use the ip address, not the domain). THEN, change your nameservers. If there are problems at that point, you'll know, but there shouldn't be. Give it a couple days, the nameservers shouls be pointing to your current server. Shut the forum down, back everything up on the old server, using phpmyadmin, dump the forum database to a text file, then upload it to the new server, again, using phpmyadmin. Once the database is imported, change the configuration to your forum again, point the mysql host to localhost, and open back up. This is the only 100% safe way to not lose any traffic or posts, and will usually work like a charm. If it doesn't, something is wrong with either the backup (it happens) or the server's configuration
