I think it'd be an interesting (possibly successful) developmental move.

If you were to purchase a community that a) has a topic that you're not familiar with and b) is already developed, there are quite a few opportunities that could arise. You'd not only be familiarizing yourself with a topic that you know nothing about, but because of this, you'd be able to invest in the community even further. Think of it as a new educational subject. While you may know very little about it in the beginning, you'll slowly develop your knowledge of the subject matter at hand as you work with it. You can then (carefully and precisely) put this newly acquired knowledge to use and improve upon a community that has already been developed to some extent.

I now have the urge to do something like this.

But on the same note, Chris, those posts aren't original posts that came from your forum's members. It came from another forum and their members.

While having a merge could be successful, it could also be quite deficient. The Cadet had a similar problem when he merged with a forum - the merging forum wasn't too enthused about it.

I'm not referring to a merge - I'm referring to simply purchasing an already existing community and then building on to it. ;)

    Ah.

See, I'm always trying to be right when I clearly don't understand what a post is referring to.

I completely agree. Though most people go for communities they know the niche or the niche is of their liking. I would love to venture on the nutella forum, since it's something I've NEVER done. I'm mostly graphics or anime.

    I agree.

This site could be made in to a far better forum than that, soon enough. I think it will be.

That forum seems a little dead at the moment and once momentum is lost it is tough to get it back. I could make a few more comments but only viewed the forum for 2 minutes.

    $100/month in advertising?

Many of those members appear to the casual observer (me) to be just numbers, possibly the reason they have joined is to have their websites in their sig line to bring attention to their site (but I really do not know and only spent 2 minutes there).

This site to the casual observer (me) appears to have helpful quality members, which you really cannot put a price on. You have the frame work constructed on AA and are now putting the finishing touches on it.

There is an article on that site regarding buying/selling forums ironically. :D

For the record I'm going through this same process now, my forum is an offshoot of a huge forum. I gave the quality members from the large forum a place to hang out without all the others. The 'numbers' are working out quite nicely.

    that's my $0.02.

So maybe you don't know everything about Nutella, but you have the enthusiasm! I have a feeling if you started that forum, you would learn more about it then you ever thought possible :)

So, it's a done deal? That's great! Let us know what you plan to do with it so that we can support you on that side :)

I'd love to buy out some of my competition, and I plan too at some point, but I don't have the budget for that right now.

I acquired an admin forum a few years ago when AAF was very in its infancy. I didn't merge, instead I just closed the acquired forum and pointed its domain at a post I made on AAF announcing the buy out. It did get a few new people to join but it was an experiment more than anything. I'd never purchase another forum again, I'd rather build it up 0n my own without the help of acquisitions.

As for merging, I am a bit against the act. The reason is because when you merge user accounts, you are not giving members of the other forum a choice to join or not join your forum, you are merging them over without their say on anything. Some people don't agree with me on that but I guess I see it like me registering you and your email on my forum without asking you and then activating your account as if you did it.

    Any thoughts on my thoughts?
