Archive Section

Do you move threads that are a certain age (e.g. x months) to a "Archived Posts" section that is read-only? I see a lot of large forums do this. Do you?

 

No, they get periodically purged. The archive section for us is for the threads that have stood out for some reason, so that they don't get deleted.

 

Nope, and i don't purge either. What's the point?

 

I don't mind having people post in old threads so I don't see the need for this.

 

Nope, old threads are old. Unless I'm doing serious forum re-organization or need to hold onto some posts for record keeping purposes, I generally leave them in their original forum. I see the appeal of putting it in an archive, like stopping grave digging, but other than that, no reason I need to do so.

 

Yeah, i'm not sure what people have against old threads. I will go through old ones sometimes and bump them up. I'd rather one thread then 5 about the same thing.

 

Isn't it (usually) a good thing for members to be reminded of how long the forum has been in existence?

 

We have all our old threads, I love reading through them.

 

I keep all discussions (threads) "as-is" - I don't really see the need to move them once they reach a certain age.

 

wait till you have a huge database and do backups, you'll definitely see the need

 

What's considered huge?

 

When a torrent is deemed 'dead' on our site, we move the thread to an Inactive Torrents forum and delete the torrent file. This forum is read-only and kept for information purposes only.

 

I see no reason to move threads to an "archive" section - unless there is a real "reason" to do so. Such as vbulletin.org - where modifications are abandoned by their developer. Then I can see moving them out of the regular sections.

But for a normal, everyday forum, no, I see no reason to do so.

 

no, i dont. on the second incarnation of the forum, which was owned by one current admin, another person and i was only a mod, the other ex staff member (not the one that was banned after killing forum number one), was obsessed with doing this, and archived every thread over two months old (this was when the forum was less than a year old) and i found it so annoying so when she stepped down and made me admin, and we moved to version 3, we stopped doing this.

 

Move them to a archive when I wish to stop them from being seen...otherwise, leave them as is...
