Do you announce member milestones on your board, such as "Jane has just surpassed 5,000 posts!" ? I have seen some forums do this (they don't do it religiously; whoever notices that another member reached a milestone will create a new thread) and it seems to spark some excitement and enthusiasm on the forum. Members feel thanked for their contributions, and they strive to continue to increase their post count (by making quality posts). Do you do this, disallow it, or just don't care?
I allow this - it's always nice to see individuals announcing the accomplishments of their fellow members.
I haven't done so on an individual basis, but we did make a big to-do over hitting the 100,000 post mark a few days ago.
Celebrating milestones is a bit of off topic fun and it makes people feel good so I think of it as a good thing. I keep a public log for the site stats that keeps getting edited periodically.
Umm, not really, I do on the chat, but just randomly. Sometimes it makes the usrs feel special, depending on the site you 'run' anyways.
I've started putting major forum milestones on the calendar, I think it will be good to look back at the history in a few years.
I don't care. As long as the post is made in the correct forum, have at it. Do any of of you have a specific forum for milestones and birthdays? I know on EuphoricArythmia there is one, and we use it more often than we should.
I actually like these threads. They do, as you said, Nick, spark excitement and are usually just happy little threads. And when you're the member that hit the milestone, it really did take a lot of time to do so, so it's worth it to be honored.
At one time I was posting monthly updates about traffic, number of visitors, number of post, number of new threads - but it was too time consuming. I would post "milestone" updates in those threads.
Generally no, we just announce forum level milestones, such as 50,000 members, or 50,000 threads (or 1 million posts the other year). That said, we did have (still have I think) a thread for people who reached a certain reputation level.
Yeah, if you don't allow member milestones, I think it's fairly universal for forums to announce their own post/member/thread/traffic milestones (or whatever else you may have, such as torrents on Lynne's forum).
