I agree to a certain extent, It will die eventually but sometimes forums can run on there own.
Trolls are equally as annoying. I had someone spam his way through 250 posts once JUST to get the word VIP above his username :/ Only about 10...

I used to use google, but for some reason it messed up my forum. Now I use the one provided by my host - Hostmonster.com
I wanted to find people into the same music as me orginally, because I knew no-one into metal. Then its grown into a community and I love running it.

I have always loved SMF and Invisionfree. Had to move away from Invisionfree though as it was no longer updated.
I would say it is optional not essential. A portal is quite handy if used correctly. I need to revamp mine.

I have 500 members, I have 2 admins and 2 mods. Is more than enough for my forum. It all depends on the forum though.
