I highly agree with you. The alert system is a really feature, and it's something new that not many other forum softwares have.
I have a Like button on my forum, but it only has 4 fans, and I don't really plan on using the page anyway.
As long as your forum/website has a niche that a lot of people like, then having a Facebook page should help greatly for traffic.
Promotions forums are great to advertise on when you first start off your website.
