Yeah keep wordpress up to date, follow some of the security tips etc and should be fine.
last year site and forums PR = 4 this month changed front site PR = 2 forum part PR = 3
upgraded 2 of my forums one from 3.7.6 PL1 to 3.8.5 and other from 3.8.4 PL1 to 3.8.5 no probs with either - all went smoothly :D helped one...
You can always go half way use apache to serve php and retain htaccess support as is and just use nginx as a reverse proxy to apache to serve only...
Using paid enterprise version of litespeed as it supports jail/chroot environment while free version doesn't and limited in number of connections...
