So I know Shelley won't join my forum to reply, so I'll ask it here and see if she does while Shelley has a member account. The smilies XenForo uses, well... there not XenForo's, they are Shelley's because she created them. Do you think she'd mind me using them with phpBB?

Should it matter if she minds or not?

I mean if the smilies are Free or whatever, can't you pretty much do whatever you want with them?

Depends, Shelley can be quite fussy about her graphics. She created the smilies, so they belong to her and not XenForo really, hence why I don't care what KAM or XF think about using them, but if Shelley started moaning about them being for use with XF only. Then I'd have to remove them or she'd only complain to forum host about it, claiming they're copyright images for use with XF and not phpBB

In a way she did create them for use with XenForo, although I've never read they are designed to only be specifically used with that forum software. I'd sooner have her say "use them", than do so and end up having to remove them all later (which by then may be used in many posts).

I know what you mean, that they're just smilies. I wouldn't bother if using any others.

There are better animated smileys out there.
My view is that if they are bundled with XF then she has to accept they will be lifted off there and used by admins on other platforms.

There will be better animated smilies, because shelley's are not animated anyway. I prefer none animated smilies, and the ones for xenforo are the best around. Plus they are in PNG format so suit any background colour - unlike GIF ones matted to a colour.

Yes, see your point about smilies being lifted from other forum platforms and used with another. But then most who create them don't care who might use them. Plus, I've not really seen other forum platforms using the XF smilies, not a forum I've come across not running XenForo. And the ones IPB use - that get used on other forums - they are not IPB smilies created by them.

She does specifically say that they are for use on Xenforo powered forums only and that you should get her permission for using them anywhere else. There are plenty of other sources of smilies out there that you can use without permission, though, so I'd recommend finding something else. If you really like hers, then ask her for permission.

    Where does she say that?

if you can post a link to read saying as much, then I'll stick with phpBB ones.

Just thinking, forgot about this. They are PNG format and the ones used now are GIF. So replacing GIF ones with PNG wouldn't update posts already showing GIF smilies, they'd all be broken images because of different image extension when GIF ones updated to PNG (didn't want to keep both). So doesn't matter, I'll stay as is.

Received a PM at TAZ directing me to your thread.

The smilies shipped with xenforo are the property of xenforo, I hand over the rights to them so they own the rights to the smilies shipped with xenforo. You would need to contact Kier, Mike or Ashley and ask them for permission.

Regarding the xenforo extended pack. I'm not fussed whether you use them, I've found quite a few forum software owners using them already.

Thanks for the reply. But as I said before not thinking about it. I wanted to "not add more smilies", but replace the phpBB ones used with the XF ones. But forgot that both are different formats, so not worth doing unless I go through database and replace all smiley.gif in posts with smiley.png. Then do it that way to avoid broken images in posts, I'll see what I end up doing later.

Right, didn't know XF own rights to standard pack, as they would have been needed to replace most of the phpBB ones. Such as rolleyes and smile, biggrin etc

It's probably best asking them. If you did ask them and they gave you permission you could always (not sure the former would work) is just change the extension for the images/smilies or load up the smilies in an editor and then save them as .gifs. You wouldn't see any loss in quality as each smiley doesn't exceed the 256 colour limitations of a .gif.

The latter solution would be the better one to take and wouldn't result in you having to go through the database. Also you wouldn't see any loss in quality (as stated above) but it might be worth asking the devs for permissions, they may even allow it.
