Regardless that the question was answered in the original thread, if some one wants to offer help or an opinion is that not what these forums are for? so why even pm the new member telling them not to bump a thread that was only 2 weeks old:confused: . Just leave it be, you could perhaps understand a thread over 6-12 months old but this looks like micro management of a none event.

Never understood why some admins moan about replying to old topics. If it bothers them that much, then close them all, or install a mod that auto closes topics after a certain age.

I have no problems with old topics being bumped. Maybe the user read it and it helped them solve a problem so they replied to say thanks. I see no problem with that. In any case, unless it's a spammer, I don't mind it at all.

When the thread is about something that can change over time. Like software features or issues.

You can't blame members replying to an old thread if left open listed on forums used for discussion. Also, not everyone checks date a thread got last reply made, and with some forum software the date is not obvious to spot displayed in posts (like XenForo). So you have a staff mod picking on a member for digging up an old topic, when that topic was left open posted on forums used for discussion.

You only close topics when its needed not because its old, when you maintain this throughout your forum people will understand that closed topics held little information. As for old posts and so on hide the quick reply box when last post is older then 14 days and warn people why its hidden. If the press the comment button even then warn that topic is older then 14 days.

Some topics it would not matter how old they are but like Scott said topics about software that's an issue when new versions keep coming out.

But if forum staff are going to complain to members for replying to old topics, they don't want them replied in. Why leave them open for, what's the point in leaving them open? It only gives the impression they are open for replying too? Yeah... I get most experienced forum posters wouldn't reply to a very old post, they wouldn't dig one up. But not every forum poster is experienced. Also, if somebody finds a topic (via doing google search), joins and replies to it. It's not like they dug the old topic up, not if lead to it from a google search result. Which is often the reason why old threads do get dug back up with a reply.

It's just tickles me the mentally of it. Leave them all open, but moan when a member replies to them.

I just gave them the solution to stopping people bumping old threads... lock it... that should keep the MODs busy for a couple of hours.

I am now tempted to find a thread a couple of years old on SEO, and bump it ! :evillaugh:

You have to learn the moderators and your users when they can or cant post in old topics. Moderator for example seem only to have one moderation tool these days and that is the close topic button it seems they do not want to use the other tools like moving post to new topic. If you learn the users and moderators this you will only need to close topics that lead to nothing leaving the rest open people then know that closed topics holds no information unless you [tag] it in the post title. Has for Goolge searches thats why i said hide the quick reply when older then 14 days and instead of showing the quick reply say "please note that this topic is older then 14days" if they press comment button so the exact same above the reply box.

If you're bothered about members bumping old topics, yeah. I'm not bothered. :)

My view is every topic is there to be discussed regardless of age, unless locked. What forums are about and why the discussion topics are their listed open for it. What's the point running a forum with 5000 topics listed, but don't want people posting in 2000 of them because they're old.

Look at like this as well. You're kind of limiting discussion from taking place, members will avoid bumping old topics they might have a question on - but avoid posting in it because a mod will jump on them. If they start another topic "on same thing" they could have replied in other topic about, then you have two topics covering same thing.

Also, you introduce a negative element into the forum running things that way. A new member replies to an old topic, a mod tells them off for replying (to an open topic). No wonder the member gets annoyed at the staff member. Could you blame that member from turning back around saying "well lock the topic then" to that moderator. What admins want is to leave all the old topics open still so it doesn't make the forum look bad to people viewing it, but at same time want to be "picky" about what they can reply back too.

Not bothred about it when they dig up old topic but it needs to be ontopic and has to add something, if its not then moderator needs to tell the person on a normal tone how and why its not allowed.

The most negative element in any forum are moderator and admins that closes topics just because it the easiest way to solve a problem. Almost any forum software have a wide range of moderation tools but still close topic is the one most used.

When you lock topics only when need to or give tags with it you can do fun stuff in search to.

You're venturing into a totally different type of scenario there, people taking topics (off topic). Actually it's an hard thing to stop from happening on a forum. TAZ try hard to avoid that happening, too hard and hence the mass post deleting that goes on their causing a lot of friction with members over keep doing it.

Threads tend to run their course at some point, they can easy take a u-turn turning into something else being talked about (just from one post made) in it. What do you do? I'll be honest, a lot of the time I do nothing because threads tend to head that way sooner or later, but can come back (on topic) again afterwards. Unless you spot a member is blatantly doing it on purpose in a thread very early on, you see a pattern forming with them keep doing it.

Problem is, and I see it on lots of forums. Members hate seeing "over-moderating" taking place. It's easy for a forum to be seen as a place where staff like flexing their muscles too much.

If a topic is going off topic it's very easy to fork to a new thread or even just ask to stay on topic, no idea why you would delete posts that deviate from the op.

Now that's what I call a bump from 2004, you must have needed a miners shovel to dig that one up.

Well... at least you stayed On Topic. :weluvxf:
