Namecheap experienced a massive DDOS attack today against their DNS system which brought down my sites and many many thousands others. More info here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7271834

Seeing more and more of this

Do that many people use a registrar's DNS services? I would think that it's better to host your own DNS or use a third party. I use a round robin DNS setup with my own servers and Hurricane Electric. I use the paid service, but, they do have a free secondary DNS service.

I've used namecheaps and previously godaddys and had not a single issue until today.

I'm also using namecheaps but have been thinking about setting up my own DNS for a while now. This might just push me more in that direction when I get some more time.

I use them for both hosting and domain name. I have been having times last week when my forum wasn't loading for about 5-10 minutes, then would be OK again. Not often, but was on and off. Might be linked to this, but thought maybe the host I was on was having a few issues.

This is really the best way. Or using services like DNSMadeEasy.

How does one host their own DNS?
My domains are registered through namecheap and i use the ips/dns of my VPS host....i haven't noticed any issues.

One of my ISP's clients has been subjected to two DDOS attack this week which has taken out the entire ISPs network. The ISP is quite small but it's still rather disconcerting how easy it is to cripple the network.

Glad my domains are only registered there and not hosted. Sucks to hear this though. :( I hate when DDOS attacks happen.

in fact noone likes when it happens.....
its hated by everyone especially IT security teams within ISPs...... :)
people who commit ddos (or ANY other type of attack) should be jailed immediately afterwards.....
Each time ddos happens, debate on network security arises, security-guys promising it will never ever happen again and what??? In 96% this do happen again.... and then nothing happens with the guy who promised.......
