I'm trying to compete with a small handful (literally about 3 or 4) websites for google searches on one particular keyword and a few variations.

The thing is the main site I'm trying to compete with doesn't do SEO, they don't have promotional runs or targeted traffic, they don't have a huge amount of backlinks, they don't advertise.... the owner doesn't visit the site. They literally sit there and google generates traffic for them.

BUT they've been around a long time. At least 8 years.

No matter how hard I try to concentrate my efforts on homing on on related keywords and scope, I can't get anywhere near them in google search results. And the keyword is low competition to top it off.

This is the THIRD iteration of this site I have tried to make work for me but I'm positive now that Google adds precedence to old sites for longetivity rather than relevance of content.

Has anyone else found this to be the case? What can I do about it?

Have you tried to work on your long tail searches, vs the short keyword and keyword phrases?

This is the best choice of action. Build quality backlinks to your inner pages and also get some links to your homepage. Remember, to change up your link anchor per page. I've also been competiting against a site that has been around since 1996. There's been a few times where I've ranked #1 for the keyword virtual pets, but they continue to hold the lead on me. That's because they have more directory links than me and more quality backlinks, so I've been focused on getting more blog links and links from online games to boast my appeal and it has been working. I also do forum signatures to help me build links.

Are you using social media to advertise your site as well? This can also give you a boast in SEO.

This quotation confirms that most webmasters are obsessed with SEO when many times is not necessary all that craziness to achieve good results.

Personally I'm the kind of that site, paying no attention at all to SEO and not visiting my sites but occasionally, although I do "backstage jobs" periodically.

However there is a fact that may contribute to have a site like that on top of the search results; an old domain name.

The site was probably in top of Google search since the beginnings of time while yours came after, and if such site is a and old dot COM, your chances to go above it could not succeed unless you invest loads of money to promote because a simple advertising plan might not attain the success that you expect, only generate more traffic to your site though.

So, if your site is number 2 to this guy's number 1, and your content is massively more relevant, why are you so worried? I know if I click on the first site and it is not relevant, I will go to the second.

The site is http://seriouslypissedoff.com and the keyword I'm trying to hit for is 'pissed off'. It isn't an ad-targeted or even popular keyword which makes me think Google's buildup of listings for it is mostly organic. I don't seem to rank for anything.

btw : the site is NOT work-friendly. Just in case you're in the office.

maybe the fact that the searched phrase is in the URL is a factor.

SEO is such a tedious job that requires long hours of work. It's a must to do if you really good traffic to your website. The results could be slow to be noticed but if you do the work diligently, then it will pay off soon.

Just do gradually generate quality backlinks especially for your inner pages. If you work continually 2 to 3 months, sure you will be found great results in this regard.
Now, the question is how you can generate quality backlinks. Very simple, just follow these basic SEO techniques in this regard:
    1. Business Directory (Your target area).
    2. Forums Posting.
    3. Social media networking.
    Try it.
