It takes time. You can't expect members to return, just because your forum is back. You need to prove to them that your forum is going to continue to grow, and reach the next level. Users don't like when a forum dies or shut downs for awhile.

Old members have most likely moved on or aren't into your niche anymore.
I would concentrate on getting new members instead to start back up with.

You need to provide something that people want, nothing more. It really is as simple as that. If there's nothing there that people want, no amount of email campaigns will compensate.

I f you have a dead forum where no one has been active for a while, you have to initiate and start being active before hiring some paid posters to get things going again. Help yourself if you want some more help.

It won't take much time if you spare some cash and work hard to get the ship sailing again.

It depends on what made it die in the first place. Did you stop adding content? If that's the case, then go back to the basics and start adding fresh and new content. Try to do some post exchanges if you need to along with Postloop. What type of forum are you running though?

Also, you need to try to build fresh new links to your forum so that the search engines start crawling your fresh and new content.

It is very difficult. You can advertise with banners. You can start contests or raffles with prizes for the forum members. you can overhaul the site's design. There's not much else that you can do besides inviting everyone that you know to join the forum and revitalize it.

I would imagine that a forum that was once popular, and now is not, that it would be a lot harder to get back to the popular stage. Users are fickle and if we don't keep the ones we have, or the ones we could potentially have, we're at a loss.

A contest is one of the best ways to do so, because with great prizes you will lure new members in. The prize must be great to get new members to join and you need to promote it a lot. A dead forum is revived with a huge amount of effort from the admins part, that includes promoting , doing post exchanges, post daily a lot, make the forum worth staying at :)

You will always have churn in your forum. Hence it is all the more necessary to get new members all the time so that you have enough new content in the forum. At the same time keep up your efforts to get old members back by sending them emails regularly. It will help if you have contests for which you can invite old members.

It could be worth sending an email maybe every couple of months? I would caution against going above that, because with a high volume of emails it would become only noise.

If you go back to adding fresh content and having your staff members/friends post as well, you could easily revive the dead forum. It only died because it lacked the content to survive and maintain the users, you continue to improve the content and continue to make the forum better, it'll revive itself.

Its very difficult to get members back but I do have a few suggestions for you. Theres a good chance they went to forums that are in the topic/niche as you are. Search around some similar sites and you might see some familiar faces. Another suggestion if you haven't already is create a twitter and facebook page. A former user may bump into one of your tweets or may remember about the site and find your facebook page on facebook.

In the meantime what you need to do is get a new crowd of people in. The whole old community is not likely coming back, so you need to get people to replace those old members.
