Hi people! I just, just joined the site and wanted to introduce myself before getting started posting and discuss everything I've learnt from being a webmaster. A little bit about myself... let's see. I started managing my first forum about 3 years and quit about a year ago. So yup, I managed the same site for 2 years. I got too attached to it at some point . I didn't even want to put ads on it to monetize it. It was some kind of baby: you want the very best for him (or in this case, it ). That's how I felt about my site, but I had to let it go after it took too much time off my hands. That doesn't mean I don't still use forums. I love using forums, for the last 4 years, I've joined forums of all kinds for all kinds of purposes. And I hope this one is one I stay in for a long time! See you around!
Hi, thanks! I actually left my site about a year ago. I started managing it in 2009 and quit in 2011, when I had no more time in my hands to manage it anymore. It had about 20k members and I think somewhere around 100k posts. Our posts-members ratio was never good To all the rest, thanks for the warm welcome!
It was a social networking forum. We focused primarily on unofficial Facebook support. Since Facebook's official support is bad, really bad, and me and a couple other people I knew knew enough from experience, we decided to open a support section and it was very, very active. We got questions of all kinds and it was fun to help each member. I'm a very curious guy myself so until I got the problem solved, I kept on digging on Google and anywhere else I could. I also wrote a lot of tutorials and that's what brought most people in. We got laughed at by other webmasters for that, but guess what? Our forum was unique, because there was no other site that did the same thing. Therefore, we got all the visitors they didn't We also had forums for other sections too, like Twitter, G+, Friendster & MySpace (once they were popular), etc. Another reason that made me left, now that I recall, is that when I first opened up the forum, I loved Facebook: all of my friends from school were already on it and I could play apps all day long. But it got boring and rather stupid after a while, so it wasn't something I wanted to have a forum for.
Sorry, my co-admin deleted the site about a month ago or so. Like I mentioned (or didn't, don't remember ), it became dead after I left, and bringing it back to life was no easy task. He of course asked me if I was okay with it and I was; I didn't really care about the site anymore.
Holy cow. So you guys decided to just delete it because you were bored with it and it was fairly dead? At the very least you could've tried to sell the content and let someone else try to revamp it. I'd hate to see that much disappear.
Dang, that's a lot of content. Should have sold it or something. Do you have any backups? I'd love to get some of threads and put them to good use.
It was on a free host called Forumotion which doesn't have database access. I could have exported it though, there are free conversors, but that would have taken a long, long, loooooong time I didn't have and didn't want to risk all the content and members.
What do you mean? Today I'm doing fine. But going to my forum again gave me some nostalgia. It's a little sad to see it died and the design had to be changed. I worked hard on many things there.
