On a serious note, it will be interesting to see if vB6 ever makes it to light as part of Internet Brands. They have like 40 or so developers now I think along with all the staffing costs to go along with it.

My guess is they would need to sell somewhere around 75,000 copies over it's lifecycle to break even... and I think that's going to be hard to do (I doubt they sold that many vB4 licenses). My psychic prediction is that at some point before vBulletin 6.0, the parent company tries to sell vBulletin Solutions. Or maybe shortly after 6.0 (I mean if they are going to work on it, why not sell a few copies if they already have them before selling the company?)...

75,000 copies. I would doubt they sold more than 25,000 of vbulletin 4. The problem is parent company is worth billions and vBulletin probably isn't on the radar as a money bleed yet to the higher up bean counters.

I noticed in the footer it says powered by vbulletin 5. If this is what they pass off as gold then vbulletin will more of a ghost town in 6 months than it is now.

The one thing I actually like about it is the inline comments. I'm an old Usenet user and always liked and prefer threaded view on a forum. As much as I disliked the hybrid threaded view of vbulletin I do like the inline comments and if they are used properly will bring the old threaded view back. It is so much easier to know who replied to who in a thread when you can comment directly to the person.

Inline COmments makes following the discussion easier, BUT it's IMO really hard to follow what's new and what not...

As i've said it in the past, it works definitely for some sorts of comments (e.g. blogs) but once you have more then 1 page, it makes tracking what's new much harder.

I don't want to need to open 5 pages, just to see all the new comments in 1 thread since my last visit.

This will IMO just prevent people from reading and posting...

I couldn't help myslef I first said "Yeah, a Xenforo or IPB license" but figured I'd really get in trouble. I'd probably get an infraction for this comment if they could give me one.

So, I am probably the biggest Vbulletin fanboy on this entire site. I have been using them and been defending them for pretty much a decade now. But, alas, this is the worst piece of crap software I have ever seen from anyone. And there is no way any self respecting Dev would EVER release something this incomplete out into the world. I do not even have words to describe how crappy it really is and this makes me very sad.....

    welcome to club:(

i thought this too, but it's just for the search, so who cares, as long as it not gets too long ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/417142/what-is-the-maximum-length-of-a-url )
i find there new forum url much funnier if you're inside an thread
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum/vbulletin-announcements/vbulletin-announcements_aa
2x forum makes it really strange

and now it's also much easier to stay away from there:D (which is hard, if you've visited it several times per day for years)
the new software makes it easy to not visit vb.com anymore

The reception of vb5 is pretty clear already. vb4.0 was marvelous compared to this.
The poll received 80 votes within a short time span until it was closed. Pretty much no one likes the vb5 feel. (except MarkB)

It's pretty crazy what they had to disable to get pages to load in *only* 23 seconds... they disabled the who's online, board stats (things like how many posts/threads the board has), even the "last post" column on the main forum page is blank now. Before they disabled everything it was taking (I kid you not) 124 seconds for me.

Their CTO it seems has lead them to an interesting place...

As long as the page loads fast, it doesn't matter that the pages take hundreds of queries to render, right?

So I was going to search for that poll, well when you search for words it'll bring up and display the whole post.. versus just a link to the post

The bug count is not really going down either, as they have been around 1500 bugs (250 major-critical bugs) for the last months. That number will quickly rise now that its on vb.com.
For some reason I no longer have permission to share bug tracker searches.

vBulletin 5.0.0 is as good as it's going to get. The final version has been officially released (not beta or even RC)... final version. :)

There is unequivocally a misunderstanding about what unequivocally means.

That is what happens when you try to add new code to an old codebase. Fix a bug, 3 more are introduced. What you'll get is a big pile of shit. Bt the time they get it half way stable all the devs will be pulled to work on vbulletin 6. That is if vbulletin is still viable in 3 years.

Unfortunately, I'm 100% with you in your prediction.

A forum member of mine is looking to start his own forum and asked me for advice. I talked about the issues surrounding vBulletin and still recommended vBulletin 4.2. I did mention Xenforo and the fact that I don't know enough IPB to really comment on it.
