So according to the tracker it looks like vbulletin 5 will be released as an RC soon. Which is Release Candidate to those who aren't familiar with the letters.
I don't personally think it's anywhere near ready to be called an RC, but it may just be me. I tried to install the latest build this weekend and ran into errors that I didn't have in my other installs. It could just be that I haven't installed vb5 in a few weeks and forgot something, but it sure doesn't feel like an RC to me.

How long do you think it'll be before it's released as "Gold", and how long after that will it be before you would even consider running it on your site?
I've actually had clients that just seen the emails from vbulletin and have asked me when we can update their 300K sites to vBulletin 5. I've told every one of them that it'll be at least a year after "gold" before I'd suggest running it on a live site. I'm judging that from the vBulletin 4 release, it took a lot of work before I was comfortable suggesting it to clients.

It's nowhere near ready for Gold Release. It still lacks basic functionality of vB4.x such as the CMS and the infractions system. And there are almost no modifications available for it. At least not the ones people most care about, like spam blocking. It's still six months away unless they are going to release another unfinished product.

No spam prevention mods!?!?!?!? That opens vBulletin up to hacking and spam attacks. I have a feeling that they'll launch this vB5 product even if it is not near RC completion; the deadline for this vBSI/IB vs xF lawsuit is only a month away.

Crash and burn, crash and burn, IB.

Release Candidate? When the heck was vBulletin 5 good enough to leave beta?

IB might really regret rushing this out...

There is no doubt it will be rushed just like vb 4 was. The more things seem to change the more they stay the same.

And it's another reason why I'm sticking with vBulletin 4 for now and that it has the infractions system where vBulletin 5 doesn't have it yet. I'm glad I didn't feed into the hype and upgraded when vBulletin released this version.

I'm a fan of waiting for the product to be fully developed before rushing because I don't want to piss off any of my members.

As i said already on vb.com: I'M HAPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Once vB5 is out, they're able to go back to vB4 improvements.
    Who cares about vB5?:D....

And my compassion (hope that's the right phrase:D ) to all the vB5 pre release customers, because their 30 day ticket support time starts once vB5 is gold and it's probably over, even they never installed vB5 because it's not ready / the cms / any other of the dozen features is missing...

What do you think they'll improve with vBulletin 4? I'm quite curious.

what i think: php 5.4 support
most important things, which i hope:
    • improve the activity stream (rss feature, better filtering, better design)
    • fix all the bugs:D

I don't even use the activity stream anymore. I use the ajax new posts feature. Fix all the bugs works for me as well, that would be nice. What about performance issues? Isn't there some things that could be improved on that front as well?

    And that's the point:D

I like the idea of an activity stream/recent activity in xf.
In xf it's too simple => useless implemented, vB4 have at least a filter feature but there's still too much which could be improved.

Sadly one of the thousand problems they have is: they don't pay attention to detail...

It seems that their managers are creating a list what should be in the product and the devs implement one point after the other, without knowing how to implement it best, what the feature is exactly for or DO WE EVEN NEED IT?:D

The next problem is IMO, that their devs have no real real idea what they're doing (> 5000!!! bugs while public beta! IMO a no go for a PAID! project)
    muhaha.PNG

you remember my "to the helpless coder"drama thread https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/sho...e-helpless-coder-of-class_taggablecontent-pgp ?:D
And we've seen where it ended....

It took several years to get to vB4.2 which needs still many improvements, BUT it's finally useful and what's the company doing? Instead of taking the positive feedback and continue for some months the work, they dropped the product and are making IMO the SAME MISTAKES again...
We're getting a vB3 + vB4 +vB5 code mix with many missing features 0 eye catchers, there's really no WOOOOOOW effect but we're getting again > 10000s bugs!
What do you mean, when you'll see a useful product with the same effect as 4.2?
Probably with vB 5.5 just before the vB6 work starts

That's my impression and why i stopped completely watching at vB5 ATM and why i'm waiting for vB4 improvements which is also very depressive...

As i've read this: http://www.alaisterlow.com/employees-leave-managers-not-companies/ my first mind was=> InternetBrands.
    The good devs=> away
The bad devs => still there, no real heads roll

    I think I've read a vb5 version of that 3 year old vb42 thread. :D

I wouldn't be surprised if it's under new ownership. The old owners would be looking to cash out right about now since they are undoubtedly feeling some pressure from owners who are not completely happy about upgrades they didn't ask for.

It's a good time to cash out and pass the problems onto someone else.

But who would pay enough for it?

The brand has probably still a high value for everybody who's not an forum fanatic and who doesn't know what happened, everybody else like us don't care about vB anymore:D

The code is useless (who would use vB4 or vB5 for the basis for something new?:D )
And you would need to invest MUUUUUUUUUCH money to bring it back (some good coders + dozen support members who are able to provide support )
AND you don't get any income from existing clients because of the current price structure

I would do it if they would pay e 500 000€ to take it
