Over the past few days I've seen a huge uptick in random character usernames registering from [email protected]. I literally deleted 50 accounts in the past few days. Stop Forum Spam isn't catching them because they appear to be all new accounts Until these services can get their act together and stop bots from registering, I banned the whole lot of free email addresses in the ACP and posted a notice about it on the registration form and change email form in the User CP via the phrase system. It may stop a few legitimate people from registering and that sucks but by and far the vast majority of freemail address users on my forum have been spammers.
I've been seeing @hotmail accounts joining but they can't do shit. Since, everything is limited to posts. They can't even post links on the blogs either. I'm using stop forum spam as well. As I see them, I ban them. @Dan Hutter
I just sent up so all new members who join, I receive an email. The bots are coming from @hotmail.com @Tom.com, I haven't seen any form @aol I'm thinking about censoring them all until I can figure out what's going on with the spam filter. Because, they're also being moved to the user group with over 10 posts, when they didn't rack up any posts yet. Damn.
@Dan Hutter add this email to your censor system as well. @chong-mail.net That email is has had a few spammers involved, so I'm passing the word back to others here.
Thanks cpvr. I've also noticed @gmx.com being a bunch of spammers. I haven't had a legitimate registration in a couple of weeks. I think the platform switch and lack of redirects is hurting me.
I've placed all new members into "mod/admin approval", seems to have knocked the spammers in their tracks. Its been working nicely the past few days.
It's so damn annoying. I don't know where all these spammers are coming from. I swear I'm deleting at least 40-100 accounts a day, and banning a few, also, deleting blog posts that manage to get through. @Dan Hutter @Iconic
I unbanned the email addresses only because a lot of legitimate people use Gmail. It's slowed down a bit now only 1 or 2 accounts per day
I only delete the "empty" spammer accounts, while I ban the spammers who has already put something in their profiles. So you prevent the ones that has done spamming before and then some more.
I I wouldn't have blocked Gmail, but I do see some spammers coming in from @hotmail, isn't it still among the popular emails? So can't really ban that one either.
I just turned on "Aggresive email banning" thanks @Iconic, and this is the list we have @Dan Hutter What email services does everyone have banned?
I have always been a fan of using hidden form fields to stop spammers.. This will stop 90% of all spam bots.. http://robmalon.com/hidden-form-fields-to-prevent-bot-spam/ Here is good link to explain it
