Have any of you XF owners been hit with spam lately? I noticed just the other day, there was a spam atttck on XF with a bunch of naked women on the forums lol...

Have you guys experienced an attack? Anything major?

On General Forums (before the merge with Admin Talk), I saw a major spam attack once or twice that led me to block their IP addresses, because they kept registering new users and post-flooding the forums (thank god we already had the spam cleaner back then ;) ).

We were getting hit a few times here a week or two ago? Then I saw another XF forum get hit because they weren't using spam protection. Then I think @bauss
had some issues with spam on his Poker forum.

Yes we're hit with it more recently, I changed the question and answer form here and it's seemed to help some.
I see people say that xenutilities is a good mod to help with spam, I've never added it but I may check it out if it gets worse here again.

XenUtils is almost as awesome as Spam-o-matic on vB

Actually it has one feature that Spam-O-Matic doesn't have that's it searches new profiles for comment spam. I got hit with that on vB a couple times before restricting permissions. It's definitely an addon worth running, IMHO.

That's usually always helps. They need to learn to stop messing with the good webmasters. I can't believe all the spam that @digitalpoint gets on a daily basis. That would be so annoying.

    I've installed XenUtilities which has built-in anti-spam functions and I haven't had a problem since. :)

It works a treat, Brandon. It's been blocking 500 and 600 registrations a day for me.

Are you now only allowing guests to read the first post in a thread? I dropped by to see what's been happening and had to log in to see additional posts. O.o

If we work on the rudimentary assumption that a 'good webmaster' will have sites with higher page rank, then it's the 'good webmasters' these bampots are going to hammer the hardest. They'll get paid more for links dropped onto a site with higher ranking

My forum is low PR and traffic and it gets hit every day by tons of bots. I have the vbStopForumSpam plugin so it stops them pretty good.
You just have to make sure not to block based on name and you will cut real members as a name can common. It's the ip and email address that does the trick.

I also noticed lately that people are joining my forums, making a couple of posts and either coming back later and editing them with spam or posting visitor messages to themselves loaded with spam.
Either way I make it that they have to have x number of posts for profile messages and posts can only be edited for 12 hrs.

That's why I turn the username part off[COMMON names] on the plugin. It was blocking out way too many legit users.

Yeah usernames shouldn't even be an option IMO. Should just block email and IP Xenforo should work on their spam filtering in the default script though. :)

That's is so true. I think we should include the spammer's IPS and usernames that they use, so other webmasters can be fully aware of them. There's a lot that actually get through systems designed to stop spam, and that's kind of expected. I'm glad I don't allow users to have signature links until 10 posts. New artists are always like "I can't post images", well ya, its because we have it in place to stop spammers. It has worked great. I think @Dan Hutter @Carlos or @evolution told me about doing that. I can't remember who actually told me now.:(

I know vB's Spam-o-Matic automatically submits the IP, User, and email to the Akismet and Stop Forum Spam when you use their clean up tool.

I think you've managed to resolve the issue, as indicated in our PCs of last evening.

I've been hit with spam on several of my sites powered by xenForo. I went ahead and installed xenUtilies and cranked the protection to 'high' and have banned only a few spammers. One or two per week now. :)

I've only recently set up an xenforo board. I saw the recent spam attacks (didn't stop me from buying). I didn't want spam bots registering initially, so used this:

    ai.imgur.com_pf1M6.png
It works perfectly, and I haven't needed to install any other spam stopping stuff as of yet.

TBH, I prefer not to use the question and answer capatcha. It can be bypassed easily.
