I think submitting your URL to online directories is a good thing. It can build backlinks as well as get you views. You never know what people look at now days on the internet...So it can't do any harm by submitting them, so why not? :)

I have to agree, it takes about 3 minutes any way, I submit to any reliable directory I find. I dont spend my time writing some fancy description which is what people often do.

My description that I use is basically the "About Us" page from my hosting site. ;) It works well and doesn't require me to continuously write something new.

What I do is just copy our META Description so yea the same for me, I don't like writing up something new each time either.

Just wanted to say that a lot of those sites MMM listed aren't free to submit your site to.

Didn't really check them. I forgot to add my own list where the majority of the directories will be free. I dont use directories that require reciprocal links by the way. What about you guys?

I've only used one directory like that. I don't like doing it either, and I plan to remove the link in the future.

Its not worth the time, there are much better directories that don't require recipricol links. I don't submit to directories that require them.

Could you tell which one are dofollow ones? There is no point to submit your site to directories, now days, if there are nofollow.

Well, I'm sure some of the sites have gotten wise recently since their new influx of traffic and started charging money. If you've been on the internet for awhile you know the ever changing nature of the beast. Nothing is free forever. Take advantage of a good freebie while you can. And, all that jazz.

As for the question about whether any of the sites are do follow, I believe they were when posted, can't say for sure now. You'll need to use a firefox plug in that tells you which links are do follow and which ones are not. There are plenty of SEO related firefox plug ins that can make the job of weeding out do-follow from no-follow.

Another thing, it's still useful to post at a free directory even if it doesn't pass along link worth.

Most high traffic directories are likely to get better search engine ranking than a new forum or blog anyway. So the Google visitor clicks off onto the directory site listing and then clicks through to your site.

It's the same principle for using Digg or any other social bookmarking site. Many of these social bookmarking sites are no longer do-follow but they do attract people to their pages who can click through your link and you will still benefit. And, as admin pointed out, it takes just a few minutes to post your link there, so why not? Even if that link only results in a few dozen more visitors weekly, that's more potential ad revenue generated, right?

Some of those sites have been doing that for years from what I can see and have read. But never mind.

Awww! I was just trying to put a happy face on the situation. I hate it when they do that too, offer some cool freebie and then jerk it away. You never know when it's going to happen either.

Anyway, you have a nice site, very clean looking. I joined through your link.

    Sorry, off topic.

Anyway, as for the list, I'll see if I can hunt down some newer free sites, but I'm still pretty sure all of them would require some kind of reciprocal link exchange. That's the only down side. That won't help your PR much. Though you could just exchange links between your blog and the free directory, assuming the blog is hosted on another server than your forum and that might pass some link worth onto all the links on your blog.

If the blog is hosted on the same server, I fear Google will see through the ruse and penalize you for a reciprocal link exchange.

Darn Google! How dare they change rules like that and be all powerful! :P

Just a thought. I'm sure there are plenty of good free directories out there. Will keep hunting and post them here as i can.

    :)
