After seeing the discussion about allowing members deleting their posts here, I thought I would create one about allowing your members to edit their posts as well :)

Soo...Do you allow your members to edit their posts, if so? why, or why not?

Definitely. I see forums which will let you edit posts but until a certain amount of time you cant anymore, or on some forums you cant edit at all. I find it very important letting your members edit their posts..

I most certainly will allow users to edit their posts, as there is no harm in not letting them edit them...however, I do like to see what revisions have been made, so I've always looked for a mod that shows how many edits have been made, and what has been changed encase anyone was trying to cover something up e.g. spam

I can't imagine not letting my users edit their posts. Sometimes I say something stupid or make a spelling mistake, and realize that it's dumb only after I make the post. I always want to go back and edit it, and I can't imagine not having the ability to do that. It seems like it should be a right of all forum users to have the ability to edit their posts.

As Tierney said, I see no reason at all to stop users making edits. I often go back and edit posts once I've thought about the subject a little more.

I agree, I too often go back and edit my posts on other forums, I agree with not letting members delete their posts, but editing should be important.

I give my members 5 minutes to edit their post. Beyond that they need to PM me. I have seen a member of a forum go in and delete all the information from every post they have ever made. While the admin was away, I don't want that to happen to my forum.

I always allowed my members to edit their posts :) however I always had the setting on so that it would show that someone had edited their post. I also used to have the setting on for members to be able to delete their posts but it would only be a soft delete so that members could see what post had been deleted and whether their was any problem before completely deleting it.

Allowing members to edit posts is a great thing that is almost essential for most forums. I allow it on my forum and I have no time limit. I have it because everybody's human and humans make small spelling mistakes every now and then. The only case in which I don't allow a member to edit their post is when the post is in an archive or something similar.

Definitely, I believe they should have the right to put what they wanted to put and if its against the rules the moderator can go back and edit and fix it and give the person a warning. I also back Tierney!

    :agreed:

    EDITING FTW!

Of course. I hate forums that disallow editing.
Ive seen some that will ONLY let you edit your last post in a thread.
This is especially annoying when have an advert thread and want to edit the 1st post or the topic title and you cant.

Yea I agree. In fact that's the only time I really need to ever go back and edit something, and when forums restrict it, I find it very annoying.

I allow my members to edit post after 45 days because that seems like a good limit, and if they want, they can always make new posts/threads. Its a method I've been using for years, and it works.

45 days is fair enough. On forums that have a editing limit, I just report it and ask them to change it for me.

45 days is a good amount of time. I don't see anyone worrying about a small spelling mistake they made 46 days ago on a dead thread.

I do. Standard users get 3 hours, premium users have no limit.

Yes and it's always good to have that option enabled so users won't double post ;)

Great point, forgot to mention that.. yea if you don't allow members to edit their posts then you can have a problem with double posting as they can't go back in and add/fix something so they will just double post.
