I left many, but offtopic.com used to be great, its too big of a forum to enjoy and that's why I left.

I had a social forum that I left in the dust due to inactivity and it was not maintained like it should be. I have the latest backup on my computer so if I ever want to re-open it much better than before. Other than that, no.

Yes - Gamewinners.com to be exact.

Advertising was too excessive. Popups popups POPUPS!

Yea ads can be a good way to get rid of people, specially popups, which just makes me automatically close my tab.

Well I've definitely given up on one now, I'm not going to name names, but it's certainly lost it's feel and it's not what it was originally about either...

If someone has to have ads on their forum, they should try their best making sure it doesnt get in the way of things. Like how I have it here on AdminBB.

I remember when I made a competitor site to offtopic.com - their users came to my community and spammed us up. It was funny because they were jealous of us in some way

I can't say I've ever "given up" on a forum but I have became busy and just didn't have time for some in the past. I feel if the staff gives up on a forum there is no reason for me as a member to be there. This has happen on more then one occasion in the past.

I had a football (soccer) forum I loved running, even though it only had a good few members joining in with discussions, I did feel really proud I was running it, in the end I had to give it up as I didn't have the time or knowledge to take it much further. I'm hoping to get a forum going when I get a bit more money, what it'll be about I'll never know.

This is slowly happening with me; though, I'm not sure what I'm going to do as of now. It just doesn't have the same feel anymore and I'm tired of the negativity that keeps popping up for no reasons.

If you're talking about my negative post about the former owner, guess I'm not to happy I got ripped off but the members are who really lose.. Who knows if a copy will come up somewhere..

Ya, being busy sucks. This happened to me before when I was running two forums, I ended up merging both of them together in the end - and then got hacked like 3 months later so all the data was lost. It sucked re-building, but hey, I didn't give up!

I actually wasn't. I do agree that it is the members who lose, which is why I feel bad for even thinking about closing a site.

I left Hallpass a while ago because the admins stopped caring about the forum. It was great for a while because we mods had full reign but it got old pretty quickly when people stopped posting.

How long were the moderators running the show? Personally once I see the admins slacking, I myself tend to leave that community for another. It's a huge turn off when the admins aren't active.

I joined the mod team in early 08 and the mods were in charge even before that. I think the problem was that the admins wanted to set up a community but didn't want to manage it.
