What's wrong with necroposting?

I expect forums probably do it, is so they get a higher post/topic count and make everyone repeat themselves...

 

Exactly with what's been said above--I don't find a problem with it unless the posts aren't constructive or add to the discussion. As Mikey said, it's particularly annoying when the user's doing a post exchange or something. :/

 

That is kind of dumb, to create new topics just to increase your stats. If you want topics to increase your stats, make new posts about entirely different subjects rather than making a bunch of posts on the same thing.

 

I agree, having many topics on the same subject is useless. But as Ash said many do it for higher stats.

 

I don't mind if it's on topic, however, there are some forums where users would purposely grave dig just to up their post count. Though, IMO, if you don't want me to reply to a topic, have it lock or something!

 

Yea, after all that's why threads get locked isn't it? to prevent replies right?

 

Personally I hate necroposting because it brings old posts back that are in 80% time outdated, and its really rare that I see a constructive post that bought them "back to life".

U usually the post is something like: "Does this still work?" or "I really like this".

They also put new thread down so the rest of the community cant see them or they have a hard time finding them.

 

If the thread becomes "alive" again and all is well, then necroposting is fine but when the OP has been offline for months and the thread is outdated or the post is dumb, then I am totally against necroposting.

 

Yea, you have a point there... I allow necroposting but not when useless.

 

Thats probably the best way because it may bring an important thread back to "life".

 

Why does it matter though? If the post is on-topic, and provides relevancy to the topic, then it should be okay, right?

 

Tell me about it, the new owner of my old site upset a long term member for stiring up old topics with new content, a post is a post and if you can keep old threads going it's great, some forums ever automatically delete old threads, why??

 

I think there is a great many things that may have upset a load of members, but that is another subject to discuss all together.

Back on topic: Why would anyone want to purge their old threads and reduce their statistics just because topics are old? I think I'd rather lock or archive them than reduce my statistics...

 

Yea I am not too happy how things are being run at that forum, specially the attitude of one person.
They must not be in their right mind purging old threads unless they are awfully big. But big forums don't even do that.

 

In my opinion, old threads must be kept dead. We must be productive and create new ones. Because some members may have forgotten the topic and not participate well in the discussion.

 

Well yea I see what you are saying, sometimes its best to just create a new thread.

 

I actually deleted *removed* from my favorites. I like that forum, but if they're going to be that strict on Necroposting, then count me out.

Back on topic. Whats wrong with necroposting, do you guys allow it on your forum, or just to a certain extent?

 

Nothing wrong with it. Depending on the topic. Example: I did have a problem with it on an old forum, people would bump really old announcement topics in the accoutrement forum. SO I created a Accoutrement Archive forum to end confusion.

 

Thats exactly why I had added a archive for the announcements forum, and the feedback forum a week ago as I had that problem.
