Do you think creating a Like page on Facebook is good publicity for you forum/webite? Will it attract more members or will it be a waste of time? Post what you think.

Personally, I think, if done correctly, it can be beneficial for your forum/website. But if you don't think carefully about it, it can be a big waste of time.

Yes it can be very beneficial epically on niches related to something on facebook for example Zynga. Even if it isn't a related niche it can still work very will if you target the likes at the correct audience and if people see you have a lot of likes they instantly think your site must be popular as well.

I agree, people are suckers for alot of likes and such. You are right about the audience though, you need to focus the pages at the correct people or it will not be very good.

If you have the time to keep it in order and post news on it constantly then yes.

But having a like page is almost like having one and a half forum.
The first one is your forum while the half is the like page.

And just like your forum you will have to invest your time in maintaining it.
I consider it will take 3 hours a day or less to maintain it.
If I were you I would employ a person from the forums I trust to help you with maintaining the page.

Yeah, there would be alot of work involved to maintain the Facebook page and forum. Although you could link them together couldn't you?

This is actually a good idea for sites. This gives users to stay in contact with the site even when there not on it. Its also good for giving out info like contest and such. Or maby something wrong went on your site you can let everyone know. Its better for them to know on a site they go on then not knowing at all.

I think it's good not only as an extra way for promotion, but also to show how many people like that page

I never thought of the fact that you can update members about downtime and such.

I agree, but as it was said above, alot of time would be needed to maintain both the website/forum and like page.

It can be very benefical if you market it among your community. Likes help you push your community forward with social media, it shows up on other's walls, and you can build a fb community around it.

It can be helpful some times but I think its a bit of a waist of time if you don't get a big fan page with over 1000 likes its useless if you have 100 people liking it but well from 100 it can go only up ;)

I don't know why but I was never really found of Twitter.

It never really appealed to me and I tried using it but got bored after 3 days.
Facebook is at least for me a lot better for promotion sif you have enough time and will to maintain it all.

Hello, yes it is, my traffic did increase much after install the "like" button. If you have many friends in your list, it will be great!
FaceBook is a huge community, all people use it. (Well, not all.!)

Having a like button, and a facebook page are two different things by the way. Whenever some one clicks the "Like" button facebook bots visit your forum, and the same for when links of your site is posted anywhere on facebook.

I believe that everything that you do will, in fact help. Even if it doesn't become a huge group members will see that you have taken the time to create a Facebook group and are trying to advertise the forum, meaning that you do care for the forum.

Many users will argue that it will and will not help but if you think about it you are gaining a backlink, it doesn't matter if it's nofollow, you still obtained one. You are also providing a higher level of exposure to users and that might gain you some followers or even members to your website.

I use my forum's Facebook and Twitter pages for one thing: Content promotion.
Like, if a new blog post, guide, or announcement is posted, a link is published to those pages and members like/retweet it. I agree if done correctly it can be a useful tool, but forum owners need to insist that the members post their threads on the forum, not Facebook. I've seen a few FB pages for forums where the members have sadly neglected the forum and paid all their attention to the Facebook page.

I have never seen or heard of members avoiding the forum and being active on the facebook page lol. And you do bring up some good points, I always tweet interesting topics for promotion, and to get some readers who may be interested and join.

It's not only good in way of promotion, but imagine how many people could be getting constant reminders of your forums existance, and become repeat visitors in turn.

I did it. Worked a charm.

Well some of them are, well, to be frank, lazy ;). So they stick to Facebook and that page, and seldom visit the forum. One member made the excuse that if only they could log into the forum with FB, they would be more active on the forum. Which sounded ridiculous to me.
Well, guess what? The admin finally got that feature working and those members still hung out more on the FB page lol. Quite sad.
