Well im not much of a designer myself, but the best one is photoshop, and gimp would probably be best for a beginner, also its free unlike Photoshop.

I really dont know you would have to ask someone that has experience in graphics. But you best bet it the GIMP website for information on it.

I find Photoshop very user-friendly and easy to use.

I started off with GIMP, though, it was OK, not as many features as PS.

PS is definitely better. I always reccommend it.

Since you're a beginner, you should probably start with Gimp. It's free. Photoshop and Illustrator are more for serious (as in wanting to make that your profession) and/or seasoned designers. Illustrator, by the way, is what a lot of people use to create those amazingly life-like self-portraits.

Todays most best designers started on GIMP, couple of my friends started on GIMP and moved onto PS, and they do a great job.

Photoshop is highly recommended, but it might be out of your price range. If not, you can use GIMP and get the job done. GIMP can have Photoshop brushes installed, so that's pretty useful, also, there are various plug-ins as well. If you customize GIMP, you can get something pretty close to Photoshop, for free!
