The title says it all really, but what kind of features would you add if you had the chance to create your own forum software?

Well there will be so many that I would add, but I cant list every single one of them. I would add basic features all forums should have and then add a few special ones to set it apart... which I cant think of at the moment.

The things I can think off the top of my head would be these:
    • Attachments
    • Instant Post Redirect
    • Quick Reply
    • Sub-Forums
    • WYSIWYG // Rich Text Editor

Its sad that phpBB didnt have a quick reply by default, i think they recently added it.

phpBB has had a basic Quick Reply as of 3.0.6, as 3.0.6 was originally going to be 3.1.0 before they changed their development cycle around.

Oh okay, and it would be great to see a Rich text editor in mybb and phpbb, would make alot of people use them just for that.

I would add a likes system and notifications system similar to xenforo because it draws in people. I love these social networking type features.

I'd definitely want to take advantage of features in social networking, such as alerts/notifications, username tagging (i.e. @Kaiser would alert you), and sign-in via Twitter/Facebook.

I recommended the post tagging for xenforo along time ago. I would love to see that.

Yeah, I love how on Xenforo it sends you alerts right on the forum when someone likes your posts, comments on it, or comments on your status updates. Pretty neat, and this is something I'd actually like to see integrated on the next phpBB release as well, because it can get annoying to check your email only for one of them to say, "so and so has responded to your topic <insert topic title here> on <insert site name here>" Email notifications are annoying, especially if I'm relatively active to begin with, because no matter what I will catch posts. Not right away, but eventually I do.

I would like it to allow many features now days. like file upload, video watch, forum site all integrated into one. Like a global forum!

    I'd personally add:

Meta descriptions & canonical tags by default
    Sitemaps as default
Twitter, Facebook and OpenID logins as default
Usergroup promotions as default (as in MyBB)
A simple to use plugin system (still missing from phpBB...)

Very nice, sitemaps are very important and I would include that as well. The rest XenForo has by default. And I will try to have a great spam fighting measure. Spam & SEO two very important things.
I am using a third part add-on for sitemaps.

Thinking about it, I'd also provide built in gzip compressing and filesystem caching for speed optimization purposes. I'd also provide a task system.

Filesystem caching would be great as well. I would also make sure all the default image sets were compressed using smush.it

Yeah, that's a good point. I'd also make use of CSS sprites where possible in the default theme and provide LESS CSS support (I love LESS).
