Do you prune inactive members on your forum?

I think pruning members is not a good thing to do as they spent their time joining your site, and you never know they might come back.. alot of boards do this and I dont quite support it. Its okay to delete spammers but not real people. Your board's member count also goes down which is another reason not to.

You may have a good reason for doing so..

I don't personally do it and never would because even if they don't post you may catch their attention via email one day. The only way I would do something like this is if my forum was large and it didn't really make a difference.

I can see the reason for it if you have like 500,000 something members, but other than that when your forum isn't that big, they shouldn't, and yes a simple board wide email helps.

I dont like pruning members, as you your member count goes down, and like you said they spent their time joining, and you never know if they might come back.

No I don't, they might come back at any point but if its an account that looks suspicious or is listed at one of the spam sites, then I'll just deactivate the account to stop them re-registering

Same here. I don't like the idea of pruning members because you never know when they'll want to come back and post again some day. Even the ones who haven't posted at all yet we leave alone, for the same reasons.

I don't prune inactive members because I have a plugin installed that alerts 0 posters to post, or lose their account, and it results in people posting.

Whenever forums send me those emails I never go back as most of the time they wont come back despite the email reminder, but it dosent hurt.

I don't send out mass emails to my members - I'm not trying to get my site blacklisted by email services.

Its not mass, it dosent email all of your members, say it will email like 1 or 2 members a day.. the numbers depend on how many inactive members.

It depends on how often the emails are sent out, though. Sometimes they can be helpful if you've left a site for whatever reason and you can't remember the link. The reminder email can remind you of what the link was so that you can go back to it anytime you like.

it could be if you per say had 100+ inactive member reminders sent each day BUT that would be highly unlikely and 9/10 the mod/software/servers will send out the mail in batches to avoid such issues, etc.

I do this every month to keep the forums clean. It really helps because if you have 1000 member but only 1500 posts on the forum it looks bad but if you delete all the inactive postsers every month then it looks a bit cleaner .

Well thats true... 1500 posts for 1000 members is very low, thats like 1/2 a post made by each member. In that case I would prune.

This is what I was considering doing when I first Opened GamingIsland forum on vBulletin 7.0, when reaching the 1k member I had to prune 129 bots
