My past forums gets spammers once in a blue moon. I've only had 2 spammers for all the years I've been administrating forums.

Wow you are lucky... spam is bound to happen one way or another as there is no method to stop it.

What type of spam protection do you have?

I actually haven't had any spam at all, and that's with no Q&A on registration (it's just a basic CAPTCHA) and no additional add-ons to block it. I'll revisit it if I have to later, but right now, I'm not concerned, so I haven't felt the need to enhance our spam prevention techniques. Plus, I haven't been able to properly test out XF's spam cleaner yet... :P

We THINK we may have a spammer on our hands, but we're not 100% sure yet. This member goes from one new forum to the next asking owners about their activity levels, and his posts NEVER make sense. I actually had to lock one of his topics and send him a warning for this reason. He also doesn't seem to realize that forums are NOT overnight successes. Asked us on Chatting Time when we were going to increase our member count... I remember having to read that post at least twice before common reading comprehension told me what he was on about, and he also asked a similar question on Lifeless, this time asking why there were so many members on during one hour and then there was no one on the next hour. Getting tired of repeating myself, I finally brought my concerns about this member to our staff room, and we all agreed to give him a warning about posting properly (which I did with Ashley.S.'s help) and keep an eye on him in case he acts up again. I was all for a permanent ban, but everyone else on staff wanted a warning, so I went for a warning. Not sure if I'll be so lenient next time, though, because Chatting Time IS an English speaking forum. I can understand it if English is not this members first language, but he types like he does on my forum CONSTANTLY with every other forum, which is why we are suspicious about him and keeping a close watch on him. I have the ban hammer warmed up and ready to go in case we need to use it.

My old forum got a lot.
Both bots and people who were being smart asses and porn spamming us.

My last forum, in it's three years, was not hit by either. A few trolls here and there, but that's to be expected.

So, if you're hit so often, have you considered implementing more spam prevention tools? I've heard good things about StopForumSpam.

Yea, if you dont take any steps to prevent spam it will continue to happen. Like Trombones mentioned stopforumspam, which is a great website and I use it here on Admin-Talk.

I get them what seems like every other 2 or 3 days. Before that it was just about every other day until I got a friend to install some measures.

It might be. I'm not sure. I let Rich handle all that.

I remember my old forum which was running phpbb, I got spam almost everyday. And I wasn't aware of Anti-spam mods phpbb had. But still phpbb cant prevent spam all to well. My current forum is new so I have yet to get any.

We have been spammed a ton on our previous software with the previous owner of the forum, however now it's very rare we get spammers. would say maybe 2 at max a week, or we get none at all.

Have you tried using stopforumspam? Or any other spam prevention mod? I believe there are tons. You can also try Goodbye spammer, Justin.S. from mybb was mentioning it on another thread here.

Sorry to hear, you should look into some non spam mods as Kaiser said.

I have some installed, they stopped most for now, I don't know of others that are sufficient and work with MyBB.

Whatever anti-spam mods you use, your always bound to get at least one or two slip past each month, but mods that have listings such as SFS will cut it down to virtually nothing if you have it set up correctly

Spam registrations have not been getting through of late (except maybe one two days ago, but no posts). Although fond of the question-and-answer anti-spam field, I am at the moment trying out KeyCAPTCHA, an image verification add-on that has a registrant put an image together. I also have StopForumSpam checking for known spam bot emails.

When I was getting spam bots more often, I was making good use of a tool similar to the Spam Cleaner Kaiser posted a screen shot of: "One-touch Spam Ban and Cleanup."
