Should Google just stop bothering with SEO any more?

Just shut down all webmaster guidelines, stop running blogs about Google algorithm changes, change all advice to 'post content people actually want to read' and watch the idiots trying to rip others off and game the search results crash and burn.

Because I'll say it again. SEO is the worst thing that has ever happened to the internet. If pretty much the entire field collapsed, I think the quality of content and websites online would soar dramatically.

Just cut off everything related to it and let those trying to get rich quick run around like headless chickens, hopefully failing miserably in the process.

Anyone else starting to think this way?

SEO is a necessary evil that we need, if SEO was gone you would not know if content is what you'll seek and if its relevant. But Google needs to be clear on the rules if you break them your site will be set to last position in the search do it a second time you will be removed forever. But the system how its now needs to be rethought and made better.

That's why I've always been focused on creating content for my members and not search engines. :) I always keep that in mind when making new topics/new posts. Especially since I've always believed that organic seo is the way to go.

I wish there were more competition to google.

Moving to page two of google's index can kill a site, so everyone focuses on gamin google. If I was able to get half my traffic from bing, duckduckgo, etc then I wouldn't be as worried about google.

^That's a surprisingly good point. Indeed, perhaps we should have the EU or whatever force Google to break up their company to stop them having a market monopoly?

I mean, they went after Microsoft... so perhaps Google and Facebook should be the next targets.

I think if Google decided to kill SEO, they would likely resort to making search engines a paid service for those who want listed on it. Could you imagine having to rank with money instead of SEO? And Google is all about making money haha :D

    This!

But then still, it can be a darn hard job sometimes. I agree with @CM30 that in general SEO has gotten the worst out of marketeers and consultants.
